Sleep deprivation among “most common” complaints during menopause, study reveals

Sleep deprivation is more common among women going through the menopause compared to the general population, a new study has revealed.

The report, published by the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), analysed the sleep quality, sleep duration and sleep disorders of women before, during and after menopause.

According to the research, postmenopausal women required more time to fall asleep and were more likely to suffer from insomnia disorder, periodic leg movements during sleep, rapid eye movement sleep behaviour, a change in the normal sleep cycle, and obstructive sleep apnoea (a condition which causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep) than non-menopausal women.

The report also found that sleep disorders are among the most common complaints during menopause, affecting around 40 to 60 per cent of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women.

Commenting on the importance of the study, the researchers warned that sleep deprivation is linked to a number of major health problems, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, and anxiety.

“This study highlights links between menopause and insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea. Given the known associations with poorer health, sleep problems should be identified and addressed in menopausal women,” said Dr Stephanie Faubion, NAMS medical director.

Alongside insomnia and other sleep disorders, people going through menopause can also experience hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, and other symptoms as the body reacts to the slowdown of ovarian production.

If you are going through the menopause and are concerned about any of your symptoms, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
